A stop at Ay Chung at Ximending 西門町 for mee sua complete with an Instagram or Facebook update is obligatory for many tourists to Taipei 😄

Ay Chung mee sua shop is located right at the heart of Ximending, down the lane where the Adidas shop is.

Actually, we asked a local first for mee sua recommendations in Ximending and he pointed us to another shop. We went there first as I love to eat where the locals eat (instead of going straightaway for the usual tourist favourites).

When you are at Ximending, you cannot miss Ay Chung mee sua. There is always a long queue outside.

There are lots of people standing and eating paper cups of steaming hot mee suah. Ay-Chung serves take away only - there are no tables and just a handful of stools (4-5?) for the elderly etc.

For many, a visit to Ay Chung mee sua is a selfie moment.

At Ay Chung it is as easy as 1-2-3 to get your mee sua in 3 easy steps. Make your order and pay on the right side, then go to your left to collect your mee sua.

It takes less than 10 seconds to serve a bowl of mee sua, so the queue clears pretty fast. A bit of showmanship adds to the atmosphere at Ay Chung 😄

Most people share their bowl of Ay Chung mee sua as there is so much more food to try at Ximenting, from street food to fine dining.

The mee suah noodles were done very soft to near breaking point. So, the mee suah were very smooth in the mouth as if they were strands of tofu.

Whatever they were that melted into the sticky gooey stock gave it a layered kind of savouriness. Little pieces of pork intestines added a bit of soft crunchiness and bit of sweet-savoury layer to the dish. (There are no oysters in Ay Chung mee sua - it is 大肠麵線, neither 蚵仔大腸麵線 nor 蚵仔麵線.)

Saw this sauce station only after we finished eating our mee sua 😂 I am told Ay Chung's chili sauce is very good. Shall try it next time 😄

👉 We enjoyed Ay Chung mee sua. Taste wise it is likeable though everyone (especially locals) have their own favourites. What sets Ay Chung apart for me personally was the overall experience - queueing in anticipation, standing and enjoying mee suah with dozens of fellow travellers. It's one of the best experiences that NT$50 can buy.

365-台灣小吃

(The other mee suah we tried was just around the corner at 365 台灣小吃 - recommended by a local. It has firmer noodles, a more savoury stock and there were both oysters and pork intestines in the bowl. Got oyster, got table and chair, slightly cheaper but no, it doesn't have the special feel of standing and eating Ay Chung mee sua. My suggestion is to go for both if you are a big oyster mee sua fan.)

I firmly believe that taste is subjective and so, warmly welcome differing viewpoints as it makes this blog better :-D But, I disapprove negative comments that are anonymous or hide behind fake identities. I feel that that is unethical in the same way as speaking ill of others behind their backs. I look forward to all your comments :-D Thank you. (Date: 18 Dec 2015)
