When Mongolian BBQ buffet was the raging food fad in Taipei, such BBQ shops popped up all over the city. Now, after the fad came and went, the number of Mongolian BBQ buffet shops left can be counted with less than the fingers on one hand. Of these, 唐宮蒙古烤肉 still packs in the crowds like Genghis Khan's hordes, no kidding 😱

唐宮蒙古烤肉 is an old shop and looked that way - it has been around for over 40 years - long before the Mongolian BBQ buffet fad and is still thriving while the others have came and went. 唐宮蒙古烤肉 has a loyal following and also new, young fans who join its growing fan base everyday i.e. so snagging a table is harder, and harder 😂

According to legend, Mongolian BBQ originated from Genghis Khan's long expeditions (i.e. invasions) westwards from Mongolia. The marauding Mongols cooked their meat on overturned battle shields, fired by wood, turning the meat with their spears - no time to be nice 😂 Over the centuries, the cooking style evolved to today's style like the one at 唐宮蒙古烤肉 - pans replace battle shields, long chopsticks replace spears.

At 唐宮蒙古烤肉, the meats are grilled over giant iron pans like overturned woks over wood fire. The pans are super heated to over 400℃ 😱

The meats are stir fried on the huge pans, the chefs using extra long wooden chopsticks to turn the meat. The chefs splash the meats with bone stock during the frying, giving it additional flavour and to keep it from burning. Action in the steamy hot kitchen is frenetic to feed the waiting hordes outside 😂

The boss 陳詠富 tops up the buffet line with meat and vegetables nearly 20 times a day to meet the demand of the ravaging crowd - many hungry, growing teenagers (often in busloads from outside Taipei and from overseas) 😄

唐宮蒙古烤肉 serves beef and lamb from Australia, and even wild deer from New Zealand. There is also pork and chicken. They have over 10 types of fresh vegetables in the buffet line to eat with the meat.

唐宮蒙古烤肉 offers many seasonings for their meats and vegetables such as soy sauce, prawn oil, pureed ginger, pineapple, sesame oil, pepper, lime juice, rice wine etc. No MSG is used in 唐宮蒙古烤肉 - with so much real ingredients, there is really no need for chemical enhancers.

One of 唐宮蒙古烤肉's signatures is their 燒餅 freshly baked crispy sesame biscuits (like little purses with a pocket). They are used as wraps to eat with the grilled meats i.e. the traditional way with tender juicy savoury meat in a toasty nutty crispy biscuit. I am hungry already!

In addition to Mongolian BBQ, customers at 唐宮蒙古烤肉 can also have their meats done in traditional copper steamboat style 酸菜白肉鍋 - the charcoal fired type with tall chimney. I think that is a perfect match - toasty caramelised grilled meat washed down with meat cooked by dunking in hot sourish pickled cabbage stock - shiok 😄

Meat lovers - don't miss this when you are in Taipei (but be prepared to queue, eat in a very crowded and busy place with many charcoal stoves burning).

Note also that beverages are not part of the buffet.
