What to Eat @ Marsiling Mall >> Fu Shi Roasted. Wanton Mee 富市传统烧腊

Dropped by at the just opened Marsiling Mall near Woodlands MRT station today - this is Singapore's newest hawker centre. The first stall I went for was Fu Shi Traditional Roasts 富市传统烧腊 as I missed their char siew - it's one of the few places in Singapore for juicy KL style char siew at pocket friendly prices.

Ah Huat was one of the stalwarts of Shunfu food centre - I met some of Ah Huat's fans who came all the way from Shunfu (near Marymount MRT) to get their Fu Shi roasts fix. Now, it's the turn of Woodlands folks to enjoy Fu Shi's roasts at their doorstep 😄

Today, I went for Fu Shi's char siew wanton mee. The normal serving costs S$3 - I added more char siew, so this costs S$5.

The wanton mee is really just an excuse to eat Fu Shi's KL style char siew.

The char siew made with pork from the pig's "armpit" has a good balance of lean meat and fat (remember to tell Ah Huat you want this cut). It is charcoal roasted till the marination outside is caramelised and fused with the pork.

The texture is like a juicy marshmallow and when you bite into it, the juices ooze out releasing subtle natural sweetness onto your taste buds. When you chew, this natural sweetness mixes with the caramelised sugar on the slightly crisp outside, producing an additive blend of sweetness and savouriness that is signature of KL style char siew.

You have to taste this for yourself to see what I mean (just remember to tell Ah Huat you want the fatty cut 😄 ).

The egg noodles were generic (the norm in Singapore) and done to a light spring to the bite. The sauce was savoury spicy (as I asked for a bit of chili) and there was a generous amount of lard which you can taste and feel on your lips.

Three wantons - good size purses with a small ball of minced pork fat and meat inside. The bone soup was savoury sweet.

Fu Shi serves excellent char siew which they use for their wanton mee. KL style char siew paired with Singapore style wanton mee - I like this happy couple 😋
